The Lynx Effect

After seeing the Micro's performance on its launch in Japan (selling over 170,000 units in a single week), do you think the tiny console, along with the DS, is sufficient to take down the PSP? Although the DS, by itself is already selling about 3x as much as Sony's first handheld, the PSP is still maintaining quite a healthy share of the console market at 20% last week. So do you believe, that due to having competition offering more affordable and portable handheld systems (SP, DS, Micro), the PSP will soon suffer what I may call, "the Lynx effect"?

Hehe, sorry about the lame joke but I've been wanting to use it in a blog post for a while. Here's another: What is the difference between a PSP and poop? Well, one's waste, a stench and a pile of sh33t, and the other is poop (:D).

Anyway, here is a visual representation of the GB Micro's latest performance in Japan:

As you'll notice, the PSP has performed unusually well this week, at only 1% under the DS's sales. It was due to the release of a new colour (white) and two new games: Winning Eleven and FF: Advent Children. The GB Micro sold exactly 170,306 units, the DS maintained its average at 72,167 units, and the PS2 has dropped to 4th place in sales, for the first time ever if I recall correctly.

oh man you are right!
psp did sell quite well but anyway its selling less than stellar as sony hoped (hehe, sony still thinks ds is a gimmick, poor sony!)I have no doubt that ds will continue its lead over psp, and the new gameboy will crush psp for good, but alas it isn't expected untill 2007.

My only concern is that gamecube has a small market share compared to the ps2, i hope its the reverse in the next gen, revolution outselling ps3 by a very very very large sales margin.

Thanks!!

I agree, the Gamecube has the least market share for all home consoles in this generation. In most catalogues now, they don'ty even bother to show any new Gamecube games (it is all Xbox and PS2).

What I really don't get is, how can the PS2 be so popular, when it is less powerful, has worse graphics, longer loading times, and Nintendo have the better 1st party games.

The PSP hopes to gain more sales with huge ads, more hype etc. But in actual fact, it is holding 20% of the Japanese gaming market, and even less in the portable division, without a major game release.

The PS3 will certainly not perform as well as the PS2. For one, Sony are probably going to delay the console, due to recent announcements of MS and Intel supported HD-DVD. Sony may have to redecide on their Blu Ray format.

This graph makes me proud to say that I want a Nintendo DS. Oh...and the Revolution will do well. From what the video said at TGS, third party development will be better than Gamecube.

PS. Can't Wait for the new Zelda for Gamecube. I am a huge Nintendo fanboy. Oh and I have got to play with the Revolutions controller. Innovation is still alive in Nintendo. KEEP IT UP!

Same here, I can't wait to try out the gyros on that controller :p, FPS titles on Revolution would RULE :D.

Its easy to say that Nintendo is doomed, but when you look at the chart they are clearly covering 75% of the total market there. Pretty nice.
