Sales for the week of July 25th through 31st in Japan reached an amazing 174.92% of the weekly average, with one PlayStation 2 title selling over 470,000 units. However, this couldn't stop the Nintendo DS' streak in Japan, as the system was still on top, selling over 10,000 more units than the PlayStation 2.

Banpresto's Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 for PlayStation 2 was the big #1 seller (470,003 units), and the next five titles in the top 10 were also brand new PS2 games - Sega's Let's make professional baseball teams! 3 (58,230), Aruze's RPG Shadow Hearts: From the New World (51,829), Genki's KAIDO: Touge no Densetsu (51,512), Tecmo's Zero -Shisei no Koe- (38,617) and D3 Publisher's SIMPLE 2000 Series Vol.81: The Earth Defense Forces 2 (36,604). At #7 was Konami's brand new Boktai 3 for Game Boy Advance with 36,339 sales, and besides Konami's #8 Magister Negi Magi 2 for PlayStation 2 (35,378), the #9 and #10 titles were also on Nintendo systems - Nintendo's popular June 30th release, Gentle Brain Exercises for Nintendo DS (31,772), and Sega's even more popular June 23rd release, The King of Beetle Mushiking: Greatest Champion (30,726). Gentle Brain Exercises has now sold over 250,000 units in Japan, and Mushiking has over lifetime 400,000 sales.

In the much hyped Nintendo DS vs. PlayStation Portable sales race in Japan, the Nintendo DS continues to build a comfortable lead, as you can see in the above graph. Overall, the Nintendo DS has sold 1,168,064 more units than PlayStation Portable. Though the 2005-only numbers are much closer (the DS has sold 154,720 more), the DS has now topped the PSP for nearly twenty weeks.
